Playground Review: The Clara (Santa Clara)

Santa Clara's newest playground opened this spring, and it's a beauty! Tucked in the midst of The Clara — a residential complex near Levi's Stadium — the playground is full of eye-catching, brightly-colored play features set around a big central hill. For my 8-year-old, it was love at first sight. She immediately declared a game of "lava monster" and darted from feature to feature, making up rules as she went. It was about as engaged as I've ever seen her at a playground, and it made me so happy to witness the creativity (and energy burned!).

The Clara has two big drawbacks. First, no shade. None at all. Mayyyybe when the position of the sun is just right, the nearby high-rise buildings will offer coverage, but for most of the day, you'll be roasting in this rubber-floored play space (and frying on the metal slides). We visited at 6:45 p.m. on a late spring day and it was lovely; at 2:00 p.m. mid-summer, it will be an oven. Plan your visits accordingly. (Worth noting: it can also be very windy due to its proximity to the bay and the wind tunnel effect of the buildings — if you go for a morning or evening visit, pack a sweater.)

The second major drawback: no restrooms. I think this was envisioned as a "neighborhood park" for those living in the residential complex, and visitors have no access to bathrooms. (Apparently some moms have inquired in the condo lobby and been turned down.) There are restaurants right around the corner, however, so if you plan around lunch or dinner, you could use those just before or after your visit. With an 8-year-old, this isn't a huge issue; with a 4-year-old, it could be disastrous.

Aside from those strikes, this park is delightful. It's fully-fenced with plenty of nearby street parking. The cool balls and unique hill structure make for creative play, and kids who love to spin will love the "spinny thing" that my daughter reports is much faster than other playgrounds'. The playground's footprint isn't large, but there's lots to do, and my daughter enjoyed it enough that I can safely say we'll return.

The Clara is located at 2330 Calle de Luna between Calle del Sol and Lafayette.

If you're a playground explorer, can visit outside of peak sun hours, and live or are traveling somewhat nearby (I wouldn't drive more than fifteen minutes out of the way for this one), put The Clara on your list!

Here's my Instagram post with a full reel showing the park's features:
